Movember is not just about facial hair. Originating in Australia in 2003, it’s a movement that has been challenging men to confront and talk about health issues for 21 years.
Why Movember Matters
Movember, whilst being fun, highlights the relevance of early detection of prostate cancer, and the importance of regular check-ups. Across our Notaro ARBD Care Homes we promote proactive health measures, encouraging residents and staff to prioritise regular screenings.
The ‘Movember’ campaign takes place every November, to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
Addressing the Silent Struggle
Talking about personal matters isn’t always easy, and it’s not always clear to see if someone may be silently struggling. Creating a space where open conversations are encouraged can provide a helping hand in discussing health concerns with friends and loved ones.
Taking Action on Mental Health
If you’re concerned about a friend, family member or colleague, the Mental Health Organisation has put together some fantastic tips on how to talk about mental health:
1. Set time aside with no distractions
It is important to provide an open and non-judgemental space with no distractions.
2. Let them share as much or as little as they want to
Let them lead the discussion at their own pace. Don’t pressure them to disclose more than they’re comfortable with.
3. Don’t try to diagnose or second guess their feelings
Recognise that you aren’t a medical expert. Offer support without making assumptions about their feelings.
4. Keep questions open-ended
Encourage them to share their feelings by using open-ended questions rather than making assumptions.
5. Talk about self-care
Talk about ways to de-stress and practice self-care. Physical activity, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep contribute to mental well-being.
6. Listen carefully to what they tell you
Repeat what they’ve shared to show understanding. Respect their feelings even if you don’t agree.
7. Offer them help in seeking professional support and provide information on ways to do this
Provide information on seeking professional help and offer assistance, whether it’s accompanying them to the GP or helping them talk to a friend or family member.
8. Know your limits
Recognise your own limits in providing support and prioritise self-care. Take time to rest and process the information they’ve shared.
Ways to Get Involved
There are numerous ways you can participate in Movember, from growing a Mo, run or walk 60km throughout the month. You can host a Mo-Ment or create your own event. For more information and inspiration, check out the Movember website.
